1. What do you do when you aren't writing?
I read books on the current best seller list, listen to operas and classical music, and play piano.
2. Who has most inspired your writing?
Wow, so many great writers past and present.
Charles Dickens, Bronte sisters, Jane Austin, Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, Faulkner are some of my favorite authors inspiring my writing.
3. Let's discuss your book The Vanished. It's a historical fiction set when the country of Korea is still under Japanese rule. Why Korea and why this time period?
I am Korean-American. There are endless stories of Korean heroes during the Japanese occupation and every story is heart wrenching for their sacrifices to save the country, all worthy to regurgitate.
4. How long did it take you to research and write the story?
Maybe a relaxed and easy year or so and not intensive at all.
5. What was the most enjoyable scene for you to write?
Korean culture of the upper class.
6. What's the most difficult part of writing for you?
Not being able to freely commend original and creative expressions.
7. Are the characters based on any real historical figures?
Absolutely, yes.
8. What's next? What's in the works for you now?
Korean legend, fables, mythology, folklore in a historical background.
I like to end on some fun questions.
9. What's the one book you could read over and over?
Very hard to pick just one. Perhaps, Scarlet Letter.
10. What's one thing you've always wanted to learn but never gotten around to?
How to quickly respond in witty words to not so kind words.
11. Color or black and white?
Color
12. Tea or coffee?
Tea
