1. Describe to us your writing environment.

My most successful writing environment was at the college library. I was able to immerse myself in the story, uninterrupted and in complete silence.

2. What was your very first story about?

Bones and the Treasure Map is my first story.

3. How do you handle criticism?

I beg for true criticism and change my mind once I get it.

4. Let's talk about your book Bones and the Treasure Map. Which came first the idea or the characters?

I guess the character came first. The book is based on my (at the time) twelve year old son. I chose him because I had read that there were few books directed to boys of that age.

5. The sport of free driving is featured in the book. How did you learn about it? Have you ever done it?

When writing the book, and talking to my kids about it, we decided that most stories seemed to involve characters with some kind of superpower, and we agreed that it needed to be a realistic superpower. When trying to figure out where the treasure would be found, we decided on an under water location and the idea of diving originated there.

I have never free dived, nor do I know anyone who does it.

6. Was it difficult to write the story from the perspective of a twelve year old, whom I assume is much younger than you?

Writing the story from the perspective of a twelve year old was the easiest part for me. I’m a twelve year old (at heart) trapped in a 49 year old body.

7. There is a good lesson in the book. What do you want your readers to remember most?

I want my readers to remember to have confidence in themselves. They are capable of more than they give themselves credit for.

8. Is there another book in the works?

If my wife has her way, there will be another book in the works.

I like to end on some fun questions.

9. What was your favorite book growing up?

My very first favorite book growing up was Island of the Blue Dolphins.

10. Are you a cat or dog person or neither?

I’m definitely not a cat person.

11. What's your favorite word?

No.

12. What's the least favorite part of your day?

Late afternoon. I’m usually tired, hungry and less effective.
A book is a dream you hold in your hands.
