I love history and to see how some people can twist it and paint it with words just amazes me everytime

Question, though - do people consider To Kill a Mockingbird as historical fiction? I was going to do The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but realize that I would not be able to finish it for this month, so I might save that as a summer read.

I do consider To Kill a Mockingbird to be historical fiction actually. Although it was contemporary in its time, the setting is definitely historical now. Just like Jane Austen.

I liked 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas' and 'The Hiding Place'. I would say 'The Hiding Place' was probably my favorite though, 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas' is kind of slow at first.

kio, thank you for this helpful post. All The Light We Cannot See is on my reading list, hope I get to read it soon. I've read the Book Thief already, and though I found it a bit dry occasionally, overall I loved the book and its storyline. The movie was awesome too.

I loved The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. After reading the book, I used this an introduction to World War II and The Holocaust. My students were so full of questions. We read the book together which lead to more questions. Then we watched the movie.
As for a Civil War book, Glory or the Blue and Gray series. Glory is a story of an African American Regiment that fought for the Union during the Civil War. Blue and Gray series tell the story of families split by political belief.

Very late to this discussion. Would alternate history fall under this or not?
