Review by Nivi Gideon -- Winners and Losers in words and...
“To succeed requires the ability to delay gratification.”
In a world where success is measured by your bank account and morality is a relic that prevailed in the past, this little comic book is like a breath of fresh air! Arthur Hartz creatively encapsulates everything that's wrong with the world today within a handful of pages.
Winners and Losers in Words and Cartoons is a book that captures the essence of life in the modern world. It is a commentary on how greatness has been redefined to suit the rich, thereby making money and greatness synonymous. The author perfectly reveals the injustice prevalent in present times in which the capitalists rule the world. In a community where money is everything, morality is redefined to suit the lives of the elitists.
Hartz uses stinging analogies to drive his point home. By twisting a few well-known proverbs, he paints a picture of the crooked world we live in. The rich make sure the poor stay hungry to restrain them from independence and greatness. The poor are forced to live in self-deceptive ignorance. He touches upon the subjects of aristocracy and meritocracy while questioning the sense of entitlement the rich and physically attractive assume. A man's worth is measured only by his external happiness and success. This results in the hyper biased world we live in today.
The author also includes a few examples that are humane and positive to depict that humanity and morality are not dead yet. There are those who still fight the good fight and endure the humiliation that comes from being moral. That is the price one has to pay to remain sane in an absurd world.
Interestingly, the book also uses a biblical reference to highlight one of its fundamental ideas. The story of Jacob and Esau is used to convey the importance of tolerance and perseverance. I also find the cartoons incredibly appropriate for the topics they depict. It adds a fun touch to the serious issues described. The writing style is simple and sarcastic, without false airs and grandiose language. I find the author’s brevity extremely appealing in the given context.
I would rate the book four out of four stars. The book was perfectly edited and without any flaw. This book will be best suited for individuals who are aware of the corruption surrounding them. It serves the purpose of enlightening one’s knowledge of the world. It certainly will be loved by anyone who enjoys having a good chuckle!
