Review of Winners and Losers in Words and Cartoons
In this book, the purpose reveals itself on every page, with radiant writing and illustrations that drive the advantages and disadvantages of being a loser or winner in life.
Winners and Losers: In words and Cartoons by Arthur Hartz reflects the privilege and advantages that successful people classified as “winners” have over those who struggle while thriving in the world classified as “losers.” In this book, both sides’ points of view are presented almost throughout the story, using cartoons, aphorisms, and supporting quotes that reveal a realistic approach to how unfair society elects. Sometimes there is humor, but even the humor feels daunting to follow, due to how harsh and deep the author mirrors reality in the name of success and misfortune.
It is rare for me to be invested in a book based chiefly on cartoons; thus, I was surprised that this was the exception. The aspects that I enjoyed the most in this reading were how real and raw the illustrations contrast on both sides, the “winners” and “losers.” In some cases, readers will have to spend some time trying to figure out some of the meanings behind the cartoons, but there are texts and quotes on the majority of the pages that may ultimately help the cartoon tell the story. The interior design was perfectly crafted; it was neat and easy to follow. The readings were short and precise, which shine on a book mainly carried by illustrations. The editing was also perfectly executed, where no errors were intended.
This book was significantly unique and well-defined; it was scarce to find traits that I did not enjoy; thus, the only thing that I wish was different was the length; I wish it was longer. Also, how the story unfolded, a more clear path that marked the beginning, middle, and end, in other words, a more structured purpose.
I am thrilled to rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars due to its neatness and excellent execution in every aspect, from the illustrations to the writing; it was a remarkable achievement on the author’s part and every person who worked on this project. A modern masterpiece that blends humor sarcastically and contrasts the reality of a person living through the lows and highs of life.
I recommend this book to young adults and adults who enjoy reading cartoons. There are several moments where profanity is shown and may influence someone else’s life. Thus, I do not recommend it to kids or adolescents. However, it will work as a therapy method for people trying to build their businesses.
