In today’s hectic and increasingly wired society, more and more adults are feeling the need to unplug and find an outlet for both tension and creativity. Adult coloring books are becoming an increasingly popular relaxation medium. Most specimens of the genre feature animals, nature scenes, architecture, or intricate geometric designs. Jaron Brown’s contribution to the field is a little bit different.

Butt Butt Volume 3, illustrated by Jaron Brown, is an adult coloring book featuring line drawings of beautiful, plus-sized women with ample rear ends. It is the third book in its series. This installment features 25 outlines of full-figured, scantily clad women showing off their curvaceous bottoms, usually with an abstract or surreal background.

The illustrations themselves are thick-lined and consist of moderately sized spaces with relatively little detail. This was greatly appreciated, since most adult coloring books are so intricate that individually coloring in the hundreds of tiny spaces sometimes seems like an added stress rather than a means of stress relief. Brown’s illustrations create the perfect amount of structure while also leaving space for the user to exercise creativity in adding details of their own or merely to sink into the soothing rhythm of coloring large expanses of skin, hair, and sky.

I loved that the pages were single-sided, which allows favorite illustrations to be removed from the book and saved without any other pages being affected. I also commend the author for his depiction of realistic women, complete with tattoos, piercings, stretch marks, and different body shapes.

The paper is typical of coloring books; it holds crayon and colored pencil well, but markers and watercolors will easily bleed through the page and onto the next page. Artists must therefore choose their media with care. I found myself wishing that the pages had been thicker to allow a larger range of media to be used.

The only text in the book, a single sentence that serves as a caption for one image, is spelled and formatted correctly, so I can confidently assert that the book does not contain any errors. Although definitely sexual in nature, none of the images could really be described as pornographic; there is, however, one image that suggests soft-core BDSM, so artists sensitive to that subject matter should steer clear of this book. There is also one depiction of marijuana usage. This coloring book, therefore, is definitely only suitable for adults.

Butt Butt Volume 3 earns a score of 4 out of 4 for its enjoyable coloring experience and unique subject matter. It would most appeal to adult fans of plus-sized women who could use the relaxation and escape of a quirky coloring book.
