Winners and Losers: In Words and Cartoons by Arthur Hartz is a satirical, self-proclaimed heretical book of comics and aphorisms. The book explores what the author describes as "America's religion of winning." This is done through nine chapters, each exploring aspects, and ideas about winners and losers. Arthur Hartz dives into who are "winners" and "losers," what makes them, their value in society, etc. For example, the first chapter, "Winning: The Most Important Thing," has a comic of two monks. One says they meditate better than the other. The book begins the conversation with an introduction that sets the scene for the reader. It ends with commentary that takes a deeper look at some of the comics and aphorisms, allowing for further discussion.

Arthur Hartz, along with the book's illustrators, does a beautiful job incorporating humor into the commentary being made. They masterfully pair the aphorisms with comics to drive home their point. Like in chapter two, "What Makes A Winner," an aphorism about the value of beauty and intelligence is paired with a comic depicting a literal higher monetary value for those traits over character traits. The comics are single or double panels and vary in artistic style, which I liked and kept things interesting. The book was well put together and organized. The best part of Winners and Losers is that it made an easy, thought-provoking read.

I did not think there were any negative aspects to this book. The book's content can spark controversy or debate; however, I believe that is part of the book's point. If the reader is sensitive to the content, it is best to read it from a lighthearted perspective. Additionally, the humor is dry and can come off mockingly, so it may not be for everyone.

The book looks to be professionally edited and is well put together. It was enjoyable and thought-provoking. It even had me laughing out loud and taking time to contemplate. I would have to give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

I would recommend Winners and Losers to anyone looking for a quick weekend read or someone who would like some fun food for thought. Even though the book is short, it can also serve as a book for deeper reading. It is a book meant for an older audience; some of the humor may not get through to kids or teens. I would recommend the book to those looking for political or societal commentary.
