Substitute (subs) teachers go through different challenges in the different schools they serve in. These challenges range from being denied benefits to sexual harassment, being overburdened by permanent teachers and intimidation from school principals. It is even worse when they are denied privileges like convenient parking spaces and are not adequately remunerated for their work. Additionally, some subs experience student intimidation, particularly after receiving notorious classes that permanent teachers do not want to teach. Mrs. White’s SUB SNIPS by Laura Moss White illustrates the frustrations that subs go through in academic institutions.

The author complemented her narrations with illustrations in this book, an aspect that I loved the most about this book. This not only graphically presented the different contexts but also enabled the reader’s vivid understanding of the toxic environment some subs teach in. The illustrations can be painted and provide readers a chance to participate in the creation of different scenes, hence boosting creativity.

Laura has also infused humor into this book, hilariously presenting some subs wondering how their colleague could afford to be happy. It made me laugh as I thought about how most of us are so accustomed to challenges that we cannot believe others can afford to be happy despite their challenges. Through this, the author has managed to paint the different worlds between permanent teachers and subs who work in the same environment. Still, each has different opinions about their jobs.

This book is an incredible manual for implementing educational reforms. It foregrounds the role that different stakeholders play in the education system and how some vices keep being inherited. This was illustrated in the manner in which a former sub began treating their colleague after they were promoted to permanent teachers. The book is exceptionally well-edited and contains zero grammatical errors.

There is nothing I liked the least about this book, which merits a rating of five out of five stars. I recommend it to teenagers and adults, who will appreciate the role played by subs and work towards improving their work environment. Professionals in the education sector will especially find this book to be an eye-opener and institute reforms toward improving the professional lives of subs.
