Being a substitute teacher, though an enjoyable job, is also a challenging job that only substitute teachers can relate to. Laura Moss White of Mrs. White’s SUB SNIPS was a substitute teacher for 15 years. She has had lots of experiences that she gladly shares. She uses humorous snapshots that help her communicate her message to the readers.

Laura discloses the challenging experiences that substitute teachers (subs) go through. They are discriminated against, disrespected and belittled by both full-time teachers and their students. They are denied school benefits on the grounds that they are just subs. They are expected to be unhappy; otherwise, if they are observed to be happy, they are thought to be using antidepressants. They are expected to be poor, as full-time teachers wonder how they are able to afford certain things, such as nice-looking cars. They are also not supposed to be invited or attend regular staff meetings.

What I liked the most about the book was the approach that the author used to communicate her message. She uses fun cartoon snips to show how substitute teachers are undervalued and underappreciated. This should be taken seriously as a cry from substitute teachers. They should be respected, valued and appreciated because they, like full-time teachers, are brave, hardworking and intelligent.

There is nothing I liked the least about the book. I liked the black-and-white cartoons. They helped to complement the author’s message to readers. Additionally, they do not detract readers’ attention from their concentration. I also liked how brief the characters’ conversations were. They were detailed and straight to the point. That way, there is no room for ambiguity for readers and they are able to understand the author’s messages.

The book is incredibly well edited since I did not find any grammatical errors or mistakes in the entire book. I award this book five out of five stars owing to the insightful information that it offers readers. I recommend this book to readers planning to be substitutes or those who have graduated from being substitutes. They will relate to the subs’ experiences and treat them better.
