Mrs. White's Sub Snips by Laura Moss White is a cartoon book depicting the author's real-life experiences working as a substitute teacher or sub for 15 years. I believe that many substitute teachers can relate to the experiences shared in this fun and concise book.

The author cleverly uses humor to portray the challenges of a substitute teacher's life. Readers will be able to see how subs get judged all the time. It's funny how people ask questions when they see a sub looking happy. This is just one of those moments that makes me laugh and realize how people assume being a sub would be depressing. Perhaps it’s true. Substitutes, like regular teachers, work diligently but often receive fewer benefits and seem to face more hurdles, such as dealing with unruly students and unpredictable schedules.

Despite that, the book also offers a few glimpses of the positive outlook of a sub, making it not at all negative and disheartening. For example, one teacher humorously shares the convenience of being able to wear the same outfit all week when teaching at different schools. Honestly, I can’t ever imagine what it would be like to manage a classroom full of uncontrollable kids. It must be very hard, but despite the difficulties, the book maintains a lighthearted tone.

It's clear that substitute teachers are often undervalued. In reflecting on these societal attitudes, the book may prompt readers to reconsider and appreciate the vital role substitute teachers play. Not only is the content great, but the cartoon illustrations are also fun and expressive. Each drawing captures the essence of the story in a visually engaging way. They are rendered in black and white, which can be another plus for those who love coloring books too.

Overall, Mrs. White's Sub Snips is a quick and delightful read. The only problem with this book is that it is too short! I just wish there was more to enjoy. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. With its witty humor, fun illustrations, and relatable storytelling, it's sure to leave all readers who are subs laughing and nodding in agreement. I didn't notice any errors or negative aspects, so the editing is amazing as well. I highly recommend this book to teachers and those working in the education field. I also suggest others give it a try to understand the challenges faced by substitute teachers and appreciate them more.
