"Mrs. White's SUB SNIPS: Substitute Teaching Cartoons From Real Life" is a short graphic novel that highlights the highs and lows of substitute teaching. Authored by Laura Moss White, a veteran substitute teacher, the book draws from her rich experiences to offer an authentic portrayal of the challenges and triumphs unique to substitute teaching. This book is marketed as an adult coloring book and is brimming with humor that transcends the teaching profession and resonates with almost anyone in the workplace.

The black-and-white illustration harkened back to the nostalgic allure of late 1990s comic strips. The artwork, though simple, teemed with expressiveness. Each character was sketched with clean lines and minimalistic detail, a technique that allowed their unique personalities to seep through. Moreover, the clever use of facial expressions and body language depicted a wide spectrum of emotions. For instance, when confronted with an overwhelming workload or lofty expectations, the substitute teachers' faces mirrored a universally relatable look of shock and disbelief. The illustrations were so evocative and clear that speech bubbles were often unneeded, as the art style alone narrated the story with no room for ambiguity.

Beyond the charming artwork, "Mrs. White's SUB SNIPS" stood out for its nuanced exploration of the very real social issues and challenges that substitute teachers struggle with. This unflinching look at the realities of substitute teaching was what truly enraptured me. The author didn't shy away from addressing the stigma that often shadows this career path. She glossed over a range of topics, from the disrespect substitute teachers face from both full-time teachers and students to the issues of overwork and underappreciation. Substitute teachers were depicted as being under constant scrutiny, judged not just for their teaching capabilities but also for their attire and perceived wealth. The book also offered a striking portrayal of hostile work environments and classrooms, resonating particularly with those who struggle to adapt quickly.

I awarded this book a stellar 5 out of 5 stars. There was simply nothing to fault. I had no dislikes whatsoever. The illustrations were charming, while the narrative struck the perfect balance between being informative and humorous. The book also maintained a clean language throughout, steering clear of any profanity or explicit scenes. Furthermore, the editing was nothing short of commendable, with not a single error in sight.

Substitute teachers often find themselves overlooked despite their significant contributions to the education system. "Mrs. White's SUB SNIPS: Substitute Teaching Cartoons From Real Life" steps in to change this narrative. The book not only acknowledges the substitute teaching community but also celebrates it, infusing their collective experiences with a dose of humor. Whether you’re directly involved in the education system, contemplating a career in substitute teaching, or simply curious about the challenges that may lie ahead on this path, this book is a valuable asset.
