Review of Mrs. White's Sub Snips
Laura Moss White's comic book, Mrs. White's SUB SNIPS: Substitute Teaching Cartoons From Real Life, is an amusing and insightful portrayal of the struggles faced by substitute teachers. The book is filled with humorous illustrations that show frustrating and sad situations. It has the potential to resonate with anyone who has ever worked in a challenging environment.
One of the things I appreciated about this book was the attention to detail in the characters' lanyard badges that showed the various roles played by each character, such as substitute teacher, teacher, principal, teaching assistant, or admin. You don't need to look for context clues to understand the job each character has in the comic. This detail makes it easy to comprehend the different dynamics at play in each scene.
Throughout the book, substitute teachers experience different scenarios in various settings, from the classroom to the teacher's lounge, washroom, hallway, and even outside the school. The book portrays the difficulties that substitute teachers face, such as being belittled, being left out of group activities with permanent teachers, not being provided with necessary lesson plans, bullying by students, and having to do tasks outside their job description, such as cleaning.
The illustrations, done by Caitlin Skaalrud, are excellent and vividly depict the situations and reactions of the characters. The facial expressions and poses of the characters are well done, making it easy to understand and relate to their experiences. The book is in black and white, which adds a classic feel to it, and could double as a coloring book for those who enjoy coloring comic strips for fun or relaxation.
I did not notice any grammatical errors, indicating that the editing in this book is flawless. The font used for the text is very readable.
Overall, I found this book to be an eye-opener for anyone who has never considered the experiences of substitute teachers before, and it encourages you to be more empathetic towards them. I highly recommend this book to students, teachers, or anyone who wants to understand the challenges that substitute teachers face. I found nothing to dislike about this book, so I give it a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars for its outstanding insights, excellent illustrations, and overall readability.
