The Firework Files by Cee Cee Evans is a novel that includes murder, mystery and plenty of sex. Evans had a previous book published called No Exaggeration.

Micky Thunder, a fallen rock star, is holding a New Year's Eve party at his opulent mansion and has invited four people he knew at university. All four share his shady past and have recently been publicly disgraced. Thunder is killed when he is blown up by fireworks at the party. The remaining four realise someone is after them but they don't know who. The story continues as we learn more about their past and discover who is seeking vengeance.

The story is quite complicated and alternates between the past, the recent past and the present. However, it is well organised and can be easily followed by the reader. Some of the storylines seem unrealistic. An example is when a jury is secretly given laxatives, and the court secretary manages to replace them with twelve new jurors she has chosen herself. Although there is a courtroom case, there isn't any tension or suspense that would normally be expected in judicial proceedings.

There is a lot of sex in this book, and it seems that almost everyone in the book is using and abusing others sexually. There are allusions to sadism, but this is not described in detail. The writing style is eloquent and flows well. It may sound surprising, but I found the weather descriptions lovely. They are so evocative and lyrical. Most of the characters are degenerate and easy to dislike. Two characters are more sympathetic but like the other characters they aren't well developed and don't seem real.

The Firework Files would appeal to readers who like to read about sex and enjoy murder mysteries. Due to the profanity and sexual exploits, it wouldn't be suitable for younger readers. It is a well-written book with a complex story. I have taken off two marks because the characters have no depth, and the courtroom case has no tension. I award this book 3 out of 5 stars.

The mix of murder mystery and all the drama sounds intense, but the lack of character depth and the unrealistic moments make me hesitate. I don’t think I’ll read it, even though the writing style seems good.

The Firework Files by Cee Cee Evans presents a complex narrative intertwining murder, mystery, and explicit content. While the plot is intricate and well-structured, the characters lack depth, and certain scenarios, such as the courtroom proceedings, feel unrealistic and devoid of tension. The prose is eloquent, with particularly evocative weather descriptions, but the prevalence of sexual content and profanity may not suit all readers. Overall, it’s a well-written story that could benefit from more character development and realistic plot elements.
