When Mandy Mazure was a child, her mother introduced her to a friend she would come to know as the rabbit in the moon. Mandy grew to share all of her hopes and dreams, and her fears, with her kind friend. Paying tribute to her mother, Mazure brings to life the purple moon-dwelling rabbit in her 2018 children’s book, My Rabbit in the Moon.

A conversational fellow, the rabbit speaks directly to kids, explaining why we have feelings, what the primary feelings are and, most importantly, that we all have them. Serving as both teacher and listener, the rabbit concedes, “We can learn together,” as he is also learning about feelings. “Tell me when do you feel love?” he asks, explaining that love is especially important, as it helps us through all the other feelings. Promising to be in touch soon, the rabbit closes with the assurance that he will be watching over all of his little friends and that he can always be found in the moon.

Illustrated beautifully by Mazure herself, this positive story normalizes feelings in a way that will be comforting to kids. Having a wise, floppy-eared friend who also feels lonely, silly, and disappointed will help kids understand that feelings are important and that having them isn’t a bad thing. The hard feelings—fear, anger, and sadness—can be especially scary to kids. My Rabbit in the Moon will elicit educational conversations and may even help parents explain feelings to children.

Mazure’s illustrations are beautifully executed. Rich, colorful, and full of life, they leap off the page and animate the story perfectly. The text is presented within the illustrations, and alternating pages are colored purple, signifying the color of the moon. I found no editing errors. I did have a minor problem seeing some of the text well enough on the purple pages. Had the color been just a bit lighter or the text a bit bolder, it might have helped.

I wholeheartedly award My Rabbit in the Moon 4 out of 4 stars for its educational value, impeccable presentation, and compassionate tone. Pre-kindergarten and elementary schoolers will love having this story read to them. When I was a teenager, I babysat a little boy who was scared all the time. As a kid myself, I didn’t have the tools to adequately help him through the fear, though I tried. My Rabbit in the Moon would have been just the thing to help us both. I think kids and parents both will love getting to know the rabbit in the moon. You can bet I was out there tonight, examining the full moon. I think I caught a brief glimpse.
