Official Review: The Pirate Princess and the Golden Locket

The Pirate Princess and the Golden Locket by Suzanne Lowe is a children’s book about the adventures of a little girl named Charlotte. Charlotte is an orphan living in an orphanage named Sevenoaks. On her twelfth birthday, the orphanage sends her away to work as a lady’s maid. She heads off on a journey aboard the ship Dorchester along with her employer's family and their dog named Mr Jacks. The ship hits a reef during a thunderstorm. Charlotte and Mr Jacks survive and are washed ashore on a deserted island. The story follows the adventures of the girl and her little dog.
The significance of this book is that it features a girl as a pirate. It is commendable that the author has broken a gender stereotype. Charlotte is a strong female protagonist who maintains an optimistic attitude and is thoroughly determined. This story shows her transformation from a helpless orphan to a pirate princess. She learns that even though you may not possess full control of your life, you can still be courageous and resilient. Through this book, the author has proved that girls can have as much fun as boys. The author has said that she wrote this book for her own kids. Charlotte is the kind of brave, positive role model that any little girl should have.
Mr Jacks is an adorable character even though he is a naughty dog with an attitude. He is an engaging character who makes the story more enjoyable. Even the pirates are relatable and refreshingly human.
I wish that there were pictures in the book. There is a picture of a map, which is essential to the story. However, with more pictures, the book would be even more enjoyable to little kids. The author has also included a glossary of nautical terms used in the book.
I give The Pirate Princess and the Golden Locket by Suzanne Lowe 3 out of 4 stars. This is because of the grammatical mistakes and missing punctuations in the book. I recommend this book to kids aged ten and above. I enjoyed this book immensely. Therefore, I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a swashbuckling pirate story.

The mistakes are negligible compared to the sense of adventure in the book. It’s a really good story and I highly recommend it. Thanks for your comment!kandscreeley wrote: ↑07 May 2019, 08:43 This sounds like a great adventure for kids. It's too bad about the mistakes, though. I feel that children's books should be even better edited than adults, as they are still learning. It's a bit young for me, and I have no kids. Therefore, I'll skip this. Thanks, though.

Indeed! And I believe this should be inculcated from early childhood. The barriers must be broken and everyone should be treated equally in the future. Thanks for your comment!Meg98 wrote: ↑07 May 2019, 11:09 This sounds like a unique and interesting read. I like how you mentioned the author is breaking gender stereotypes! There definitely needs to be more of that in our modern literature world right now. Thanks for your excellent review, and sharing your thoughts! Cheers![]()

I do like the idea of pictures though. Not even necessarily full color ones...ones th a look like sketches in an adventure book go way further in my opinion.
Thanks for your review. It sounds like a great book.

Yes, when I was a child I used to love the pictures in Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and other stories. They used to take me to another world, one farther than words can take me. Thanks for stopping by to comment!Mezorigi wrote: ↑07 May 2019, 21:42 This sounds like a fun book to spend a stormy afternoon with. I too always appreciate the shifting of gender norms and that would make me much more likely to choose this book than a similar one with a male protagonist. Kids need to see folks of any and all genders in all different roles from the beginning.
