I Know I Am! Alphabetical Affirmations is a children’s picture book written by Christine Michaelides and Da’shon Reid. The book encompasses the concept of affirmations and gives positive examples that children can use. Each letter of the alphabet has a definition of a word that can be used within an affirmation such as “belief”, “happiness”, and “wisdom”. There are affirmations spoken by children throughout the book that go along with each of the definitions.

I love the positivity in this book. None of the words were new to me, but they are all defined in ways that I have never seen before. For example, “joy” is described as a “positive vibration”. I’m not great with words, so the only way I can think to describe these definitions is that they made me feel good while I was reading. I kept thinking that I should use these affirmations.

My favorite part of this book is definitely the illustrations and the way the book uses them to get its message across. The vibrancy and color add to the positive vibe that the book gives off. As I mentioned before, the children in the book are stating the affirmations in the pictures. This really ties everything together and shows children how affirmations work. I also appreciate that the editing is flawless. I didn’t notice a single error within the book.

The only thing I didn’t like about this book is that children might not understand it that well. The vocabulary is difficult and some of the definitions are too abstract for young children. I personally loved the definitions. I thought they were positive, and I think these are definitely affirmations I could use in my daily life. I was just trying to imagine myself reading this book to my nieces and explaining some of the concepts. I understand them, but I’m not sure that I could relay that meaning to the young audience that the book is intended for.

I do have a solution for the problem I mentioned above. Parents could use this book as a teaching tool for young children. One letter could be covered each day. A discussion could be held between the kids and parents about these concepts to make sure that the kids really understand them. This would also keep kids from getting overwhelmed by reading the book all at once, and it would give them time to practice each of the affirmations before moving on to the next one.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I only had the one problem with the book, and I think it has a very simple solution that doesn’t require the author to change anything. Because the author doesn’t need to fix anything within the book, I can’t justify giving it anything less than a perfect score. I would recommend it to anyone looking for some positivity to add to their life. I honestly can’t think of anyone I wouldn’t recommend the book to.

What a sweet idea. I love that the author has forgone the ‘A’ for ‘apple’ cliché and branched out into something a bit bolder and definitely more instructive. And, of course, beautiful illustrations are a bonus. Many thanks for your most enjoyable review.

This sounds like a really sweet book with a good message. I like your idea that parents can use this as a teaching tool for their children and cover one letter a day. Great review!

What great ideas the author implemented in this book. I like what you said about it being a "teaching" book as well for children, which is a fun way to have bonding time as well as learning time... thanks for your great review! Cheers:)

I agree that the language might be a bit confusing for children. What age groups would you say this would work for? I like the idea of working with both children and parents to overcome the vocabulary. Thanks for reviewing!

Sounds like a wonderful idea but I wonder whether it's maybe a bit strained. So much positivity all in one place can sometimes come across as a little fake. But since you appear to have enjoyed the book then maybe it really is genuine and uplifting. Thanks for the review!

The book is written for children, but it could be useful for other age groups too. I like how you describe the illustrations in the book. This looks appealing. Thanks for the recommendation.

I love the thought of having a book of affirming words for children. It's a great concept. I'm just not sure that children would understand joy as being positive vibrations. That's my only concern. However, it sounds like one I should pick up for myself! Thanks!

I like the positive learning children acquire through affirmations, which I think it's a new theme I have come across in a children's book. Nice review.
