Books by Road Dahl (BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda,.......) are really worthwhile.

Also the Harry Potter series (obviously because this is crazy famous).
Oh and The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and of Tom Sawyer (something adventurous)

This was one of the first to come to my mind as well. Wonder taught my oldest daughter a lot when she read it. She knew a girl in a wheelchair in school and she stated that she felt bad for her as others would treat her differently. It is sad but it is the reality of how kids are.
