Review by DorcasToo -- Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse
Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse is a fictional novel which covers several themes. Ranging from family ties, religion, love and racism.
Minister Kublai Khan is the head pastor at the House of Jeremiah temple and is known by many as a devoted man of God. So when he approaches his board and fellow pastors of colour with an idea of taking over the White people it is received with mixed responses. This doesn't deter him from his Revolution of the black people taking over America. He meets up with Rev Hung a Chinese national in order to create mixed-race children with black men. He has a dream that one day the black people will rule over the white people.
Pastor Dalton hears about the plans of Kublan and he is not happy at all as he views this not only as a sin but an inhuman act. This is because the children will have absentee black fathers and will be raised as blacks. This makes him come up with what he calls Christian soldiers to curb this menace. As the two priests lock horns in this power struggle who will suffer, and who gets to be sacrificed for this course.
This book is captivating and mesmerizing enough to capture the readers' attention and mind from the beginning to the end. As I read through the pages, I could see not just the creativity but the vivid image the author wanted to portray. Considering racism is still experienced to date and quite a contentious issue he's covered the issue so well. The characters are exceptionally done portraying emotions and weaknesses where it fits. Definitely, the book is well written.
The editing has been done well as I found just one error. The only downside I had with the book is the use of so many characters that easily led away from the plot. For example, I feel Sarah despite undergoing discrimination because of her black father doesn't fit well with the plot. Because she isn't related to any of the other characters. Despite this, I really enjoyed how the author showcases the different cultures from Mexican to Japanese yet he manages to give us a solid story.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. Despite the issue I have highlighted above; will still give a full rating as the author has done well. The cliffhanger at the end is massive, and I am looking forward to reading more content from the author. The book contains profane language and some sexual content, so discretion is advised. I recommend the book to readers who would love to know more about racism.
