I did not read the first series as well but from your review I know I can start from the second and not feel left out. I, however, frown at the jumpy pace of the books you mentioned. I thought one reason why books are written in series is to enable a slow but intriguing narration of events that build up the storyline.
I will definitely add this to my bookshelf.

The title really hooks the reader and kind of leads you into a curious/suspension path.
