Margaret Carrick’s Penguins’ Tale is a children’s book that, just as the title suggests, gives a very beautiful story about penguins. It begins by giving a picture of what life for the penguins looked like in a land where they were the only inhabitants. Due to the rapid changes in the composition of the universe, the penguins were exposed to a new world, and they had to develop some survival skills. What did the penguins do to ensure that they secured a place on Earth?

I loved how Carrick struck a beautiful balance between the illustrations in the book and the words used in narrating the tale of the penguins. What’s more, the paragraphs of the book were written in a poetic manner, which is very captivating. I am sure many readers will love this feature too.

A lot of creativity and talent went into making the illustrations of the book. Can you imagine what a crystal flower would look like? Also, the trees were given a happy and content human outlook, an aspect that I found to be very magnificent. I loved the inclusion of other animals in the book, such as the rhinoceros, the bear, and the owl.

The only thing that I think would not be very attractive to children is the author’s choice of color. Throughout the book, she used black and white only in all the illustrations. I believe that a rich mixture of colors would be more appealing to the young audience. For instance, the sun, the stars, the moon, and the sky would be best if given their natural colors.

The book is error-free. Although I believe that young readers should be able to enjoy the language used, the author used the word ‘preposterous’ which I believe could be a bit cumbersome for them.

I gave Penguins’ Tale a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. Since this is a children’s book, the lack of variety in color made me deduct a star. I did not give it a lower score due to the beauty of the tale and the great creativity poured into the illustrations. I recommend this book to all children who are between three and ten years old. An older audience would find it refreshing too.

My kiddo loves penquins... I have to introduce this book to her. Could the black and white illustrations be because the penquins are black and white? However, I agree with you on that the younger readers would probably prefer more colours.

I feel children's books should not be printed in dull style. Colored illustrations help in keeping their interest high while reading as they can easily relate to the content.
