Official Review: Professor Crawly Lesson 5 by Gary Chase
Gary Chase celebrates imagination and creativity in his clever children's picture book, Professor Crawly's Slinky the Spider Lesson 5. Professor Crawly is a wise ant who introduces different positive attitudes in the 15-book series for preschool children. The fifth book features the web-spinning talents of an industrious arachnid, Slinky. It emphasizes positive principles such as creative thinking, confidence, individuality, helping others, and perseverance, while also teaching how crawly creatures benefit the environment.
In the synopsis, Chase explains that the series is a joint endeavor with his granddaughter. Chase illustrates the books based on inspiration from Delaney, who creates "the look" for each character. The result is a collaboration of whimsical illustrations that will appeal to young children. Likewise, Chase presents the meaningful lessons in amusing rhymes, although he purposely keeps the content brief to hold the attention span of preschoolers. However, Chase's creative use of wordplay like "webinar" and "Spin City" may also appeal to slightly older school-age children, and I can picture them reading the book to their younger siblings.
I especially like the clever details that Chase includes to illustrate the simple lessons in the book. For instance, the story mentions that spiders protect the garden from pests; the accompanying illustration features a small sign that reads: "Bad bugs will be captured!" I also appreciate the colorful illustrations depicting Slinky's imaginative web creations. In addition to his modest web abode complete with a "Home Sweet Home" sign, Slinky spins model homes and condo designs.
While there isn't anything I dislike about the book, there is a lack of clarity regarding its title. The PDF format I reviewed has a different title than both Online Book Club and Chase's website; the latter two sources also differ slightly. My one suggestion for improvement is to implement title consistency.
Overall, I rate this professionally edited children's book 4 out of 4 stars. Despite the minor inconsistency regarding its title, the delightful story will amuse preschoolers, teach them simple facts about spiders, and model positive attitudes. I recommend the book to preschoolers and their older siblings, parents, grandparents, and teachers.

I have to agree about creepy spiders, but cute illustrations make Slinky more approachable.
