The title is okay, I believe the author hilighted the protagonist to shift the readers' anticipations each time the name (Kalayla) appears in the plots.

I really prefer 'Kalayla' to 'family ties' or any other name. I think it's appropriate and has an interesting ring to it.

After reading the book, I thought the title was appropriate. However, the title did not capture my attention before reading the story. I wondered if it were a foreign term and would be about someone's life in a foreign country! Or maybe it was some word with religious connotations (similar to Hallelujah) relating a spiritual journey. My first impression? - I would change the title. In hindsight - it makes sense.

To answer your last question, I don't think their is a good enough title to replace this one. Now to revert to your first question, I think Kalayla is the perfect title because Maureen life - unfortuantely - changed because Kalayla was born. I believe if Jamal and Maureen got married and they never had Kalayla before he died, then Maureen would have been accepted back in her family faster. Kalayla is needed to show the disconnect from Maureen and her family and Lena disconnect from her two surviving sons. Lena became the necessary grandmother figure that she needed in life and that made Lena realize that she is spending time with Kalayla and not enough time with her grandchildren and the communication with her two sons is strained. Basically, I'm saying that everything points back to Kalayla and her influence on those around her.

I think Kalayla hightens interest in the book doubling with the fact that she's the main character... Any reader wouldn't be disappointed with the title at the end of the read... Family ties? Nah! Think we've had a lot with that. My opinion though

I feel the name is the perfect title for the book. The name arouses questions in the mind. And given that Kalayla is the youngest, she holds the future events. Thus, everything depends on her. Also, the name adds effect to the story. The title seemed dramatic to me

Kalayla is the one who ties all three women. So, I think that title 'Kalayla' is appropriate for the book.

Perhaps, the author envisaged that a large number of readers will find Kalayla more lovable, so why not make it the title of the book? Also, I think it may be because the name 'Kalayla' is rarer when compared to 'Lena' and 'Maureen.'

Maconstewart wrote: 01 Sep 2020, 15:26 I think the name is perfect. Her name is unique, and therefore can draw many in just from curiosity. Also, Kalayla is the center figure of the three womens' dynamic, so naming the book after her is appropriate.
I agree with this. Also, I think it creates some expectative around the character and let us, as readers, think how she connects with the rest of the book. Another example of this kind of titles is in the Spanish film, by Almódovar, Julieta. The film is based on three Alice Munro's short stories that revolve around a family and two generations. However, we focus, in this case, on the mother. In here, I think it is the opposite, her dynamics and behavior are what moves the action. So, I find it particularly intriguing that in this case it is through Kalayla, it seems as if, more than starting the action, she is the destination, that everything that came before releases on her.

I think "Kalayla" is a memorable and unique title. A more generic title such as "Family Ties" could easily get lost in a search as there are already a few books with this title.

I think Kalayla is a perfect name for this book. It basically centers around her, even when Lena or Maureen is telling the story. Lena came into Maureen and Kalayla's lives because Lena was drawn to Kalayla and couldn't resist talking to her. Maureen meets Lena because Kalayla starts helping her. Also, the name Kalayla is super unique. That alone would make me look into what the book was about.

I think that the book is mainly named after the younger protagonist because of her name sounds nice and sounds intriguing with it being just her name.

I really like the title of the book as it represents the female protagonist. Nothing is better than the name of the lead itself. Moreover, Kalayla is a very unique name, giving a different dimension to the title.

I think the book's named Kalayla because she's the one who takes the centre stage throughout the entire plot. She deserves it!

Since the protagonist is also the titular here, the title of the book is very suitable for this story. I love books that the title is also the protagonist.
