Official Review: Success Is The Best Revenge
Success Is The Best Revenge by Kathy Sechrist is a novel about a middle-aged woman named Sara Matthews from Whidbey Island. She was in the process of finalizing her divorce from her long-time husband, Ray. The pair had grown apart in the last five years of their marriage. During the divorce process, Sara found herself with limited financial muscle and options. She was a budding entrepreneur but didn’t have enough client base to sustain her business or living expenses. She had partnered with Thomas Hunter, a shrewd businessman from England whose little black book was Sara’s saving grace. He sourced clients while Sara developed programs for the clients. Their partnership was strictly professional until they decided to pursue a romantic relationship.
Their relationship was rosy and filled with heartwarming moments until Thomas laid his hands on Sara. What unraveled from then on is a gripping tale worth reading.
There are quite a few aspects that I liked in the book. Firstly, Sara did not have a college degree, but she enrolled in short courses that helped her develop, sharpen, and broaden her skill sets. Secondly, there were many odds stacked against her from her childhood to adulthood, but she never retreated and pursued her dreams relentlessly. All this spoke to her powerful character and taught me that you can go through the worst and still come out on top if you are willing to put in the work.
The book was written from the first-person perspective. This perspective gives the reader front-row seats to the author’s journey. The layout of the book was coherent, and it flowed logically. Every chapter starts with an excerpt from a song or book. These excerpts set the tone for the chapter and give the reader a glimpse of what will unfold. The book explores sensitive themes like sexual violence, domestic violence, and mental health in a gentle and light-hearted yet powerful manner.
There was nothing I disliked about the book. It was exceptionally edited, and I only came across a few minor typographical errors. These errors did not hamper my reading experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Readers should note that the book contains a few graphic scenes of violence and profanity.
The storyline was educational, inspirational, and relatable. For these reasons, I am awarding it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to readers who enjoy empowering fictional novels. Readers who have been affected by domestic violence and abuse will relate to this book and learn a thing or two from it.
