Review of Twisted But True
[Following is a volunteer review of "Twisted But True" by Darren Burch.]
Reading Twisted But True by Darren Burch makes you truly appreciate the dedication and selflessness of the police force. These brave men and women risk their lives every day to ensure the safety and well-being of their citizens. They are indeed worthy of commendation.
Darren Burch is a retired police veteran from the Phoenix Police department with over 28 years in active service. He won several medals including, the Medal of Lifesaving and Army Commendation Medal, and over 100 commendations. Suffice it to say, he is a well-decorated police officer whose years of active service is greatly appreciated. Even after retirement, he still found a way to help people by being a public safety expert for local media outlets. So, it is obvious that a book about his years in the force would make a worthwhile read.
One thing that’s obvious right from the start is his sense of humour. In some chapters, his descriptive writing style leaves you reeling with laughter, while vividly painting visual representations of the different scenarios. In others, he conveys the gravity of the horrible crimes and how the perpetrators are brought to book. It is understandable that in his line of work, faced with so much horrific evidence of man’s inhumanity to man, having a sense of humour is sometimes necessary for surviving each day at work. The stories range from the average criminal offences like domestic disputes and bank robberies to the macabre and gruesome crimes like murders and sex crimes. What they all have in common is the propensity to grab and hold the reader’s attention until the last chapter.
I also like how he talked about his personal life and shared intimate details of his family. He described how an unforgettable experience in his childhood made him become the man he is today. He shared his personal triumphs and his tragic losses. It gave the book a personal touch, as I could understand Darren not only as a police officer but as a family man.
The only issue I have with the book is the structure of the pdf version that I downloaded. It was a struggle to read because two pages counted as one and were in small print. Magnifying it didn’t help as it meant one page would go slightly off focus, making the words disappear at the edge of the page.
Overall, I’ll give the book 3 out of 4 stars only because of the pdf format because it affected my reading experience. I couldn’t find a single error, so I have to say it was exceptionally well-edited. It does contain some graphic descriptions of violent and sexual crimes, so perhaps it is not suitable for younger/sensitive readers. Mature lovers of true crime stories would absolutely adore this book.
