Hard Journey of the Heart by Mark Zullo is a tale about a man named Jesse who struggles to publicly express and express his sexuality. In this book, he shows you different parts of his life with different lovers that have influenced his present-day form. He has troubles with possessiveness and lack of communication with his partners and also struggles to limit their open relationship and control his polygamous tendencies and high libido.

A positive aspect of this book is that Jesse is a realistic character; He is somewhat relatable in some ways and it was refreshing to see such genuineness in a fictional character. Another aspect is that this book was very blunt and not censored in any way, however, it is entirely upon the reader to determine if it’s a negative aspect or a positive one. I consider it positive. Blunt and graphically narrated scenes may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I appreciate it.

A negative aspect for me is Jesse’s character design; although he is a realistic character, I don’t like him. His character design is good but I find him unlikeable and often annoying. Another aspect of this book is that it is written in alternating timelines and switching from flashbacks to flash-forwards, it’s a bit confusing at first but you’ll get used to it.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because it expressed various stages of character development and it was narrated very well. This book does involve graphic sexual scenes and blatant, plentiful curses. Thankfully, this story is very well edited and I didn’t find any typographical errors. I recommend this to mature audiences that do not discriminate against homosexuals.
