How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is a book that sets to explain to people how to achieve success in their lives, families, and areas of work. The book starts off with M. Curtis McCoy explaining his background story and how he was able to achieve success. Within the book are interviews he did with successful people and they explain to us how they too achieved success and generally a little about how they lead successful lives.

At the age of 27, M. Curtis McCoy was a successful man who had achieved so much at such a young age. He owned a couple of companies in industries like the fashion and pharmaceutical industries. However, he got diagnosed with brain cancer and suffered mal seizures daily that hindered him from performing his normal day-to-day activities. Due to his illness and the treatment costs, he ended up losing the wealth he had amassed. He was diagnosed with 60-90 days to live, and at that moment is when he decided he wanted to impact people’s lives positively. He reached out and interviewed many successful people he admired and what followed was this book. He recovered fully and also went ahead to build a successful Telecom provider company, Best Cellular, with the help of his family.

Throughout the book, he and the other successful people interviewed, give an interesting breakdown and provide guidelines on what success is to them, how to achieve it and how to remain successful. The people featured and interviewed in the book, including the author himself, are people who have worked hard to get where they are. We see some faced with adversities such as losing all their money and how they built up their wealth again from scratch. The interview questions are strategically chosen to be able to help the people interviewed to give a holistic perspective of who they are as professionals, who they think they are personality-wise, their success journeys, the values they value in themselves and those around them. They even highlight their weaknesses which is something that I found impressive and humbling given their levels of success.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and was disappointed when I got to the final page. What I loved about this book is how it is not like other motivational or self-help books. It breaks the norm of a flowing essay by one speaker giving instructions and to-dos. Instead, we get to interact with a number of successful people, without meeting them or reading tons of books. I love how none of the people made attaining success seem easy, but they also did not make it look unachievable thus making the book quite practical. Most of the stories given show that the people who succeed are people who actually are willing to put in the work, and the book gives some insights on exactly how to do so.

The book is precise and straight to the point with what it aims to teach and give its audience. Like any other self-help book, one encounters the cliché: wake up early, exercise, eat well guide. But apart from the emphasis, there is a lot more to take away from the book. For example, my favorite has to be “Reading every day is an excellent habit of successful people. You can quickly surround yourself with positive influence and great thinkers through reading.” This is a statement that was said by McCoy in the book. The statement rings true to what he has given us in the book. It is also well written and flows well, therefore quite easy to understand.

With my hand to heart, I can truly and honestly say I do not find anything negative to say about the book. It was well executed and meets its objective. However, it has some religious references and for someone who is not affiliated to the religion mentioned, or is not religious at all, they will find some parts of the book unrelatable. Even so, the religious contexts mentioned do not take away from the main message of the book and do not shift the focus of the book.

I rate the book How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy four out of four stars. Having found nothing to dislike about the book, the rating is well deserved. In just 185 pages he was able to captivate one to actually flow with the book which is something that is usually wanting in books in the genre. The message is well written and delivered, well-edited, and easy to read and follow. The fact that it has some religious context that I had not anticipated does not take away from the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is planning on starting their entrepreneurial journey, anyone who wants to be successful and can do with some guidance, and also students in school or students of life who need knowledge in going through life.
