Review of Join Me on the Road in Texas
Aside from the Dallas Cowboys and the Mavericks, nothing is loved more in Texas than the fairs and festivals. The Lone Star State hosts some of the liveliest and hungriest festivals.
Join Me On the Road! In Texas—as written on the colophon page—by Austin P. Roadman shows just how big the fairs are in Texas. The author recreates himself as an armadillo character dressed in a cowboy getup—complete with his guitar and a sheriff star.
Austin P. “Road...Man” (the armadillo’s name) invites us on his travels across the great state of Texas. During our visit to the eight festivals, Austin the armadillo shares historical tidbits about each one. Although, the focus is on the tasty dishes and unique snacks served at each fair. Most of which are mouth-watering, such as the strawberry tarts at the Strawberry Festival. However, I’ll stay away from the alligator-on-a-stick at the Grape Festival. Having visited Texas, this story brought back fond memories. But, I’ve never been to the Six String Festival. I’ll plan my next trip around it.
Roadman hit the mark by choosing a ballad to recount his story. Not only was it fun to read, but it has you tapping your boot to the beat. I had no problem hearing the music in my head. Also, the colorful illustrations are comic-like and festive, showing various activities found at the Texas fetes. In addition, the author presented a duck riddle to solve. Embarrassingly, I couldn’t decipher it, but I had a hearty giggle at the answer.
This book deserves a 4-star rating, but the grammar guideline dictates otherwise. As a result, I had to rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I have no negative aspects to point out and was pleased with its simplicity. Also, I look forward to more road trips with Austin P. Roadman.
This fun tale is a must-have for readers interested in the regions of the United States. The story is informative and could be used in school writing projects. I recommend it to families vacationing by car with their younger children. It could increase their enthusiasm and curb their boredom. However, older readers may get bored since it is a quick read.
