As a historical fiction fan overall, I enjoyed this book. I must say I was unsure of whether or not James would betray Lilly in some way. I was surprised their relationship turned into a romance because they had been friends since they were children and I didn't see them as a romantic couple! This book was not my favorite historical fiction, but I liked it.

I liked the writing style and the subjects discussed, although some aspects of the plot reminded me of the old soap operas. I also didn't find convincing the romance between Lily and James. I would give a 3 out of 4 stars: it is a good novel if you don't have something better, but not exceptional, in my opinion.

I really like the character development in the book, as every character has a backstory. The chemistry between Lily and James, and Lily's attitude towards life, is pretty interesting. I will recommend this book to some of my friends, as they are fond of these type of books. If I am reviewing this book, I will give this 4 out of 4 stars.

The chemistry between James and Lily is the spark of this novel. I totally enjoyed reading it. The punishment which was given to Lily brings a complete change in her life.
I would rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars.

I gave the book 3 out of 4 stars. The premise itself was so fascinating. Imagining a situation like that of Lily and James seems impossible in itself. The writing is beautiful and the character of James is a very gentlemanly one. Can't wait to read the sequel to know what happens next.

Lily went through a lot and her father selling her to Jesse Adam's family really made it a bit off the cuff as she met a new master whom she barely knew about. The fascinating part there is when she met with Auntie, who was obviously old, she had worked with for generations of Adam's family. The element of romance between Lily and James was my favorite aspect of the story. The chemistry between both characters and their development was intriguing. Four out of four for me.

I just finished reading this book. It's unique and entertaining, as any good book should be. I loved the new take on history. I mean, it's hard to find books in a historical setting where the romance actually entertains you. But the story did tend to get slow-paced at times. But overall it was a good read. I rate it 3 out of 4 stars.

As a woman of black heritage, I find it hard to read novels about slavery and to enjoy them. However, I gave this a chance and did enjoy it. As I thought, there were scenes that were difficult to read, but I pushed on. Lily's and James' relationship felt a little forced and unrealistic to me, but then again, this is a work of fiction. I definitely intend to read the next book in the series, as I am eager to see Lily's character development grow.

I rated this a 4 out of 4 stars. The character development was exceptional. The vivid imagery used made it impossible to not be disgusted by the maltreatment of slaves. I thought subjecting James to the barbaric murder of a person was beyond reprehensible. From my understanding, this was a common practice and the black person was always killed after suffering from torture.
The cliffhanger ending was definitely a motivator to read the sequel.

The author was very meticulous in the character development of this book and the introduction of suspense, love, and romance kept me Immersed while reading. The chemistry between James and Lily made the book enticing to me as I could hardly stop reading it till the end. For me, it's a four out of four stars rating.

I did enjoy reading the book. I loved the way the plot was developed by Skye. It was great to see that the author cared about the depth of the characters and allowed them to grow throughout the book. I usually read the book before bed, and I had to force myself to put it down. However, I was very disappointed with James and Lily's relationship. I believe that Skye was trying to make their relationship appear very romantic. However, it just seemed forced to me.

Though there was some aspect of the story that I was not impressed with especially the language. The characters were well written, loved Lily's passion, and full of life attitude, a character that would like to see in most romance novels. I have no impressions of James' character honestly, it was fine for me. All in all, I will rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars. Would surely recommend it to anyone who likes romance novels.
I completely agree that the cliffhanger made the book more exciting. I would rate the book 3 out of 4 stars as well. I think that the relationship between Lily and James was a bit forced and it ruined the experience a little bit.

My takeaway from this book is Lily's attitude. And I love the historical romance settings. The book really deserved a 4 out 4 star rating. Although I didn’t like James’ decisions regarding Lily’a future.

I feel there are so many things to love about this book. First of all, I think the author did an amazing job with the character development. I enjoyed Lily and James love story too, it was really amazing. Then I feel the plot of the book was well thought out. The book contained a lot of suspense. The only downside is that I did not fancy James as a character, although he is a patient man.
