Review of Mythic Worlds and the One You Can Believe In
Mythic Worlds and the One You Can Believe In is written by Harold Toliver. Is a non-fiction book. It discusses myths. With various citation from science, literature, philosophy, and religion, the author presents his arguments in an interesting way.
He illustrates areas where myths have dominated. The areas addressed by the author are commonwealth ideologies, religious beliefs, nomenclature, among others. The author has explained how this myths were invented, reason for their inventions, and how they evolved to be referred to today's society. He unfolds each myth and presents them. He cites evidence from different ideologies and philosophies from different philosophers. He has portrayed using research using the citation he has quoted through out his book. He has discussed the role of politics and religion in promoting myths. For instance, he gave an example of Adolf Hitler, who used propaganda as a weapon to wipe out Jews from Germany and this led to war.
The author used different styles to make his work enjoyable and interesting. He used sophisticated vocabularies to present his work. The author was sacastic. This required the reader to be keen to point out the idea which the author criticized and the one he supports. He used quotes from scientist and prominent authors like Albert Einstein, Elvin Goffmann, Roman Lucan, and many others. He uses detailed evidence and his statements are backed up heavily by research topics. This makes the book hard to read and complex to understand.
What I liked about the book is that it is highly informative. The author explains the idea of myth and spiritual beliefs. Shows how various beliefs have been made, their illusions and ways we can use to avoid this deceit. He makes the reader to think critically on the beliefs he has being believing. He has used history to support his ideas. For instance, naming of things. We have usually tend to name things based on our beliefs.
However, I didn't support the author in his views concerning religion. According to the author, he says that religion is 'highly-placed sacred myths'. He cursed religion deeming it as a root cause for destruction of this world. Although, I might think the author is a non-believer and this gives him right to criticize religion. People interested in religion will ideally oppose this book.
In conclusion,I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars . The book was well edited. No valgur language was used. There were no errors either spelling mistake or grammar mistake. I gave it three star's because the author criticized religion which is not good to do so. People have different beliefs and practices. Changing a person belief is hard and this is left to individual to decide. I recommend this book to be read by anyone who is interested in research, and to have knowledge concerning beliefs and myths. Strong believers of religion are advised not to read.
