Review of Vengeance is Mine - The Vengeance Series
Vengeance is Mine is a book in The Vengeance Series by Leon Opio. It is a thrilling horror-fiction novel. It is a short story that depicts how Suzanne got her revenge after she and her father were wronged. On getting out of the mental hospital which she was forced into, Suzanne studies the four primary persons who wronged her, and at the right time, she takes all of them captive.
She places and ties up each of them in four different rooms where they await their torture. She starts by inputting fear into their minds by telling each of them a story to refresh their minds about the crimes they committed against herself and her father. Soon after that, she does a face reveal which leaves all her captives in shock. What is she up to?
A lot of things about this book are commendable. With just a hundred and twenty-six pages, Leon was able to put together a beautiful piece of horror fiction. Leon gave a past story of each of the characters. These past stories were mostly about the crimes of the captives; the author recounts their past lives leading to their criminal activities. The plotline of the story is incredible. I also love the pacing of this book. Even though the story seems to have started from the middle, I was able to understand the events that occurred in the story because of how the author wrote the story. What added suspense to the book was the captor being left bizarre at first. Most of the events in the story were even able to leave me in shock and in awe. I was shocked when I found out who the captor was. It also made me imagine the kind of torture which was meted out on the captives. The book's cover was captivating. I fell in love with it at first glance, even before the story got me thrilled.
I wouldn't say I liked the way the book ended. I felt it left me wondering what certain characters had in mind for Steve and John. I mean, when Suzanne came back to the hospital to deal with them, I was longing a little bit more. I was left with various imaginations of what could have been; this is not entirely a negative aspect, but it affected my enjoyment of the book. Also, I came across a lot of vulgar words in this book. I didn’t enjoy this one bit. I also found a host of errors in this book. This leads me to the conclusion that this book was not professionally edited.
Therefore, I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I deducted a star from my rating because of the number of errors I found in it. I would take another star away for the other negative aspects I mentioned. I would have loved to give it a perfect rating, but the book had its own flaws. I would, however, not give it a lower rating because the story was captivating. I recommend this book to lovers of horror books. They would appreciate it much better because of the gory scenes this book depicts.
