Review of Family Crystals
Family Crystals by Amber Vonda is a fast-paced action-packed fantasy book. The book starts off with a normal family Christmas. The family comes together for celebration, but a massive earthquake catches the family members off guard. They soon notice that it was not a normal earthquake, due to the blinding lights and their phones not working. One of the husbands that had been sent on a coffee run was disoriented by the earthquake which caused him to wreck his car. Another group pulls up to the house only to find that it was completely gone! In the homes place was a massive black pit. What happened to the house? Is the husband in the wreck alive? How will the occupants of the house maneuver their newfound environment? Will they sink or swim?
I really enjoyed the number of details that the author put into this book. Given the number of characters, there had to be many different details to distinguish between them all. I really enjoyed all the fantasy and magical characters. From mermaids to wolves to kings and queens, this book had a huge amount of fantasy aspects to keep the reader entertained.
My only gripe, mainly just a preference thing, is the number of characters. Within the first three chapters, the number of characters that are named is sixteen people and three dog names. I personally find that extremely excessive. More characters are introduced throughout the book also. There were about fifty named characters in the entire book, and that is not including any that were fillers or that were just not named.
I rated this book 3 out of 4 stars. The full rating was not given due to the jumping around throughout the book. I was often confused about what was happening because so much was happening. I often found myself having to reread past paragraphs or chapters to figure out what was happening. This book was exceptionally well-edited. I found no grammar or spelling errors. The number of details that this book had was incredible. The book followed many different characters on their journeys and adventures. This book had a unique storyline. I could never anticipate what would come next. It was action-packed, and I had trouble putting it down.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes sci-fi and fantasy books. I believe this book is not suitable for all ages. There was a scene in the book that depicts erotic acts being forced upon a person. I would advise the reader’s discretion. I would also recommend discretion to people who are sensitive to sexual assault and miscarriages.
