An Element of Mystery is a 67-page collection of short stories and poems written by Zoe Davis. In this book, there were three stories titled "The Mystery of the Red Diamond," "Press-Ganged into the Navy," and "The Pharaoh's Curse." On the other hand, there were eight poems with varying verses. The first was titled "The Monster Under the Bed," while the last was "Stuck in Limbo (For Those Lost but Not Forgotten)." In the first story, the supposed befitting heir, Henry, was faced with the task of discovering the treasures that were hidden by Lady Scarlett Diamond before her death. To achieve this, Henry would have to solve puzzles. Does he have the wits to unravel the hidden fortunes? Will he encounter any setbacks?

Even though the stories in this novel were relatively short, all the questions I had were answered. Also, the characters were well developed since I understood what each represented. I believe this was so because the author strategically wrote the book such that it did not require unnecessary characters. My best story was the one titled "The Mystery of the Red Diamond." I liked it because of the mind-blowing suspense, which kept me guessing what would happen next. As a result, I couldn't help but stay glued to my seat to find out how the story would end. All the poems appealed to me. This is because they explored the struggles that may be encountered by anyone.

There was nothing I disliked about this book. In fact, due to how it appealed to me, I completed it in one sitting. The plot was logical and easy to follow, and the language used throughout the book was understandable because I did not have any issues with comprehension. Furthermore, I loved how a particular character communicated with a German accent, and another briefly conversed in French. These brought the book to life and made it more realistic. I also appreciated the author's unique writing style.

I read An Element of Mystery by Zoe Davis with a great eye for detail. However, I was unable to pinpoint any grammatical or punctuation errors. Hence, I can state that it was exceptionally well-edited. It is necessary to state that the absence of errors added to the smooth flow of the book.

Owing to my overall appreciation of this book, I will give it a rating of four out of four stars. I did not give it a lower rating because there was nothing I disliked.

This novel will appeal to individuals who love short stories laced with suspense. Readers who love easy-to-understand poems will appreciate An Element of Mystery. As such, I recommend it to them.

I love the author's fine writing skills and character development. I am impressed to read that the characters were not only well developed, but were carefully chosen. It can be annoying to find in a book characters that are totally irrelevant in the development of the content of a story; something I would refer to as wastage of characters. I'm convinced this book will make an interesting read.
