The juxtaposition of everyday life and the harsh realities of war, from dice games to forced marriages, painted a vivid tapestry of survival. The dying soldier's last thoughts lingered with me, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for a semblance of normalcy.

The poems are well-written and evocative, and they can be very moving to read. They capture the pain, suffering, and resilience of the Syrian people in a way that is both personal and universal. Congrats on #BOTD

It is very cruel and sad what the Syrian people have to endure. Poems about dying soldiers, a bride longing for her father, children playing on the rubble that used to be their neighbours' houses are too upsetting and not something that I would like to read. Thank you for the moving review.

Voices From a Forgotten Letter by Seif-Eldeine comprises many poems representing civilian points of view of all ages and backgrounds. I found this to be a unique way to view the Syrian War and learn more about the lives of the victims. Terrific book review!

I added this book to my bookshelves. This review piqued my interest. I want to know about the lives of the Syrian people. I will be privy to images of the civil war that only those who live there can truly know. Poetry can convey powerful images and thoughts without an excess of words. Seif-Eldeine is a master poet. Thank you for this review. :techie-studyinggray:

I have never really been a fan of poetry, maybe because I always failed them during English classes back in high school or something lol! But after reading through this amazing review, I might reconsider. I got a little emotional reading through your review on the part about the bride wishing for her father to be present during her wedding and it made me want to read the book.

“ The most beautiful letter, as it’s the hardest to say. What we have replaced it with comes easier, but at much greater cost.”
The beautiful memory of times before the never ending war of arrogance and greed that have cost the lives of both many born and unborn children of Syria are delivered with provocative comparisons to the present times where everything is bleeding, starving, slowly dying.

I'm glad to hear that the collection resonated with you and provided a different perspective on the war in Syria. The poems capture the intense imagery of life continuing amidst the conflict, showcasing the struggles, resilience, and dreams of the Syrian people. It's commendable that the author, Seif-Eldeine, was able to convey these stories through the power of poetry. Your appreciation for the glossary provided at the back of the book highlights its value in enhancing your understanding of the Syrian conflict. It's wonderful to hear that you wouldn't change anything about the collection and wholeheartedly give it a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars. In just six paragraphs, this review took me through a journey of human life during warfare, especially a civil war.
Seif-Eldeine really hooked me in a captivating storytelling, till the end of this book of poems. The Last Thoughts of a Soldier was one of my favorites, because in this poem, especially this part; "He looks up into pine trees and thinks about Christmas and his young son. There is the red of decorations like the red of his blood. Gradually the reds and greens merge until there is a ball of light above him, and then .... death!" Seif-Eldeine pointed out to us the fact that soldiers are not machines or just the right arm of a government, they have family, life, love... They're humans!
I also think that the name of the book 'Voices From a Forgotten Letter: Poems on the Syrian Civil War' was very well chosen because it implies a lot of things on how the world addresses the issue.
This review has made me a fan of Seif-Eldeine, his work should be ready by every generation because it emphasizes how civil war can affect the normal lives of people in a country.
