Review of Genesis of Yoga
"Genesis of Yoga" by Tony Sanchez is a book written about the basic knowledge required to begin the art of yoga. The author systematically guided us, the readers, through the required information for powerful enlightenment and to build the mindset with which to begin.
In this book, Sanchez made an interesting exposition when he explained how the mind is different from the brain, how it is invisible, and how it is the transcendent world of thought, feeling, attitude, belief, and imagination. In the first chapter, Sanchez gave his reason, motivation, and the beginning of his journey into the spirituality that led his life to the acceptance of new beliefs and spiritual veneration. He told us about two major events that changed his life completely and led to his problems of coping with reality until his friend offered him a book, which, on reading, ushered him into the world of yoga and his path to self-realization.
It is interesting how Sanchez brought together different belief systems, religions, and teachings from major spearheads like Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Buddha, and others to create a common understanding of the existence of the being that we dwell on as humans. Sanchez linked different theologies to various levels of consciousness, exploring the fall of man from his unity with the divine, the infinite one (God). He also differentiates between the ‘Tree of Life’ and the ‘Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil’ in the Garden of Eden, emphasizing that Adam’s punishment was not for eating from the tree but for disobedience and failing to take responsibility.
Moving on to the actual art of yoga itself, I learned the basic training principles and the Core 26+ for physical and mental fitness. With the aid of pictures, I tried the different positions as my first-ever yoga practice. I like the way the author ends every section of the exercise with a quote for spiritual cohesion. I admire the method with which the author interconnected spirituality among different awarenesses of the universal one, God, to navigate the exploration of the yoga enlightenment and the practice in reality. One special thing I learned from the author is how passionate the start of his journey was. How excited he was to give in ample time and effort to reach the point of fulfillment and spiritual breakthrough.
There is nothing I dislike in this book. The book has a few errors, but they don't hamper my flow of understanding while reading; hence, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is very insightful with various fundamental knowledge for self-realization and self-care, the art of yoga, and its spiritual benefits. I recommend this book to everyone because understanding higher consciousness can elevate one’s being and inspire personal growth.
