Deceptive Calm is a book I enjoyed reading a lot. Spending time with the characters and following along their unfolding stories was my little highlight every evening. Although the book touches on important topics such as racism, women's rights and domestic violence, it is an easy read until it really picks up speed in the finale!

The book follows the stories of 3 young people with different skin color and what they experience due to their backgrounds.
Especially the story of the main character, Vanessa, is very interesting to follow with some major twists. The author describes her development and relationships so lovingly detailed, that the events happening to her older version are shocking.
The finale is very fast-paced and almost like a thriller, ending almost abruptly with plenty of room for imagining the future of the characters.

If I have to name one negative point: the description indicates a bigger focus on the downfall of an important family name. However, the book actually doesn't write as much about this topic as I had expected.

Vanessa, the Black girl that looked so white that she was rejected by both races in the orphanage, turned her life around with determination. Although, I didn't appreciate her marriage with Todd.

The book is an excellent piece, it is the best for young adults and teenagers. I enjoy the dynamics of the characters.

With all due respect, did you read the book? Two male characters s*xually assault the main female character, people of color are gratuitously being called racial sl*rs, and there's a botched abortion scene in graphic detail. It is NOT best for young adults and teenagers, and there needs to be a content warning on this book. The readership for this book should be limited to adults.
