Re: Who Is Doing NaNoWriMo This Year?

Post by virginia »

This is my third year doing Nanowrimo and this will be the first time I actually complete it! (Dangit!) I'm totally determined to make this the year. The first year I started a steampunk novel but found out how much research I needed to do for it so it didn't go very well. Last year I fleshed it out some but still hadn't completed all the research I needed to have done. (I'm attending college full time, work full time, and have a family so finding opportunities to research is often hard for me)
This year I'm started a completely new novel -- kind of a hybrid horror story that I hope will help me work through a personal tragedy that I experienced a few years ago.

I write using Scrivener, which I absolutely love! I adore the outlining and corkboard features and the way you can save research and attach photos.

I have heard about this Scrivener, but I haven't tried it for myself. I should check it out. I have only ever heard good things about it. Yet, I kind of have no idea what it is!

They offer a discount on it if you win nanowrimo, so if you're going to hit the 50k goal then wait to buy it! There's a free trial version so you can test it out.

Thanks for the warning. I didn't even know it was something you had to pay for. That's how little I know about it!

I write in Scrivener too and it is awesome. You can get the free trial now, ALynnPowers, and it won't end until December 7th. If you meet your 50k word goal, you will get 50% off if you liked writing in it and want to buy it. It is a really great program and helps me organize my thoughts and get started writing quicker. Sorry this turned into a Scrivener commercial... it is just a wonderful program for writers.

Haha sorry, that's partially my fault :P

Oh, and to Virginia--THAT'S RIGHT. THIS WILL BE *YOUR* YEAR XD This will be the year everyone on this thread hits 50K ^.^ (whether you've done it before or not) XDXDXD

I really want to go to one of the WriMo meetups, but uugh school/homework/work/life/time is a thing :/ Has anyone ever gone to them before? I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a social gathering where people talk about writing, or if it's basically a thing where everyone gathers to one confined area and types without making eye contact with each other. I feel like that could be very awkward.

Thanks Neropanda! I'm off to a slow start so far but I'm gonna get there! Last year I met a friend of mine at a coffee shop so we could write together and there happened to be another nano writer there too. It was an older guy who walked in, saw my friend and I with our laptops open and said "Excuse me... are you participating in Nanowrimo?" --- like it was somehow obvious --- we must give off a vibe when we're writing or something! We told him we were, joked around for a bit and then he sat near us and we all typed in amicable silence. It was fun but my friend and I have busy schedules aren't weren't able to get together again during November that year.

I imagine bigger, formal write-ins must be much like that, only with more socializing at the beginning and end. (??) I worry that write-ins might be too "talky" and would end up being a bigger distraction for me than actual help. Anybody here willing to share your experiences if you've been to a real one?

I'll let you know. I haven't gone to one, but I am joining in on the activities for my region for the first time. :P

Congratulations everyone! We have made it through the first week! Hopefully you are about a quarter of the way through your novels! (No one look at my word count!!! It's extremely misleading!)

I started NaNoWriMo this year but I've been more procrastinating than writing the last few days. I think I'm stuck. I may jump ahead of the stuck part and start writing from there. Maybe if I come back to it later, it will be more clear.

On the write-in front, it was fun, but pretty much what you guessed. I think that the chatnano.net virtual write-in's are more fun. I am almost caught up from my downtime from being sick. Hopefully everyone else is doing well!

I have been with NaNoWriMo since 2007. In fact, my book was born through NaNoWriMo. I usually manage to make the challenge about every other year, some years are simply more hectic than others. So far this year is looking good as I crossed 20,000 yesterday. Working in retail makes hitting my daily word count a little challenging but I tote my little laptop to work and write on my lunch hour and of course some more in the evenings. Thank goodness for days off which provide the opportunity to stay ahead of the game.

Good luck to all of you. Enjoy the insanity and creativity that NaNoWriMo challenge provides.

I've never done a write-in! I don't know even know what goes on there. People just get together and write?

I finished my book!

It's a little anticlimactic, though... the timing is just weird.
