How do you tell?

Post by Morrosseth »

How can you tell if your writing is too bland, boring, childish, unrealistic etc...?
I really like writing but I'm afraid that's it'll be really silly and boring. :(

You have to bug other people to read it, bottom line. There is no other way to tell. I'm lucky that the bartender at my favorite bar is a reader and his wife is an English Lit. major. I'm also lucky that his feedback doesn't only consist of "it sucks" or "I liked it". You must have other people read your work. Criticism is tough to handle some times, but as far as I'm concerned it is the only way to instill the confidence needed to continue on. Not only that, when the criticism is constructive, it's extremely helpful in making adjustments. When you get it right, positive reviews from those who have criticized you before can lead to a period of heightened productivity.

If you feel that way about your writing, there's way to change it a little so that the way you write fits into some category. Magical realism requires there to be some suspension of disbelief. Or just go to fantasy/sci fi. As for the childish aspect, I have other felt that way about some of my own writing. But you have to remember that younger kids need to read too, and there's nothing wrong with contributing stories that keep the younger generations reading.

As for the boring and bland, it was already stated. Have others read it.

Good luck!

If you are some way through a manuscript, then it is best to pause and to send a sample chapter blindly to a number of editors at publishing houses. If they do not get back to you then you know that all is not right.

I guess the best way to test that is through showing others your work.. Ask them about what they could say..

Have some people read your drafts and make them to give their views on it. You will get a fair idea about it to get started with!

The suggestion of getting friends to read one's drafts may seem like commonsense, but, really, how practical or feasible is it? Sometimes it is easier getting blood from a stone then to get people whom we know to, as a favour, read our work and provide feedback. Even on this portal, there have been forummers who have posted some of their writings here. The response has been tepid, to say the least. Being ignored has been commonplace.

Something really important to remember when you're writing is that you take it too seriously; if you are getting bored writing it, how do you think your readers will feel? Have fun, play around with words, and keep people interested. You shouldn't worry about quality or quantity as you're writing something new; just get your thoughts on paper and save the "fluffing" for later.
