Are they good or bad? Well, at least some of them used to be corporeal humans so it depends on what they were in life as to how they turn out in death. However, there are some very nasty things who were never "alive" as we know it and are definitely evil so be wary.
Although it can easily lure one in, the paranormal, be it ghost hunting or whatever, isn't something to be played around with. You never know who or what you've really invited in to your home and life...

My quick answer is "yes and no, I believe in ghosts but I also don't." And while that might sound pretty escapist of me, I would more so call it inclusive.
In Tibetan Buddhist culture, many peoples have been working with spirits for a long, long time. But if you ask a Tibetan spiritualist (they're not actually all Buddhist) if the spirits are actually there or whether it's a machination of your own consciousness, the answer will be unclear. You will most likely be warned to be very careful because some spirits are unpredictable and can do incredible psychological harm, and also be told that the entirety of existence is a work of your own mind (bogey included).
What I mean to say is that if the person dealing with the spirit is already the prey of their own mind, then a spirit can do a lot of damage, but if they are the master of their mind, they realize that the spirit is just another part of their mind and are therefor master over the spirit.
Now these people are very few and very far between and I certainly don't think I know anyone like that, but the general concept is easy to understand.
If you are not scared of yourself, then you have no need to fear any devil.
If you fear the dark parts of yourself, then the devil has already won.
Opening yourself to the spirit world is like moving to the jungle. You can be safe and stay in the city, or you can move to the jungle where there will be many beautiful adventures to be had. But in the jungle there are also jungle cats. If you know what to do when you see a jungle cat, then you have nothing to worry about.
Be at peace.
