Sarette is a normal teenager struggling to figure out what college to go to and what she wants to do with her life. Unfortunately, she’s starting to think she’s crazy. You see, she thinks people are watching her. Then she starts hearing voices and seeing things. Just when she is about to commit herself to an insane asylum, she learns that she is a fey princess. Elwin has come from the fey realm to guide her in her journey to the fey. Not everyone wants her there, and her way is fraught with danger. Elwin’s job is to make sure she arrives safely.
Meanmna: Book One of the Daearen Realms by Emmy Gatrell is a science fiction/fantasy novel. The book is about 267 pages and makes for a quick read. The story is balanced with the right amount of action interspersed with lighter moments and descriptions of the fey world.
Everyone loves a good Cinderella story, and I’m no exception. I enjoyed reading about Sarette. I loved learning about the fey world along with her. It’s interesting to me to see someone ruling a world so completely different from their own. I like to see two worlds come together as it always seems like the kingdom ends up getting the best of both worlds.
Unfortunately, there was nothing in this story to set it apart from all the others of the same genre. I have read other stories about the fairy world, and I didn’t find anything different in this one. There are five types of fairies based on the elements; fire, earth, air, water, and spirit. There are dark fey, and there are light fey. These same elements found in other stories make the story predictable although still enjoyable.
There was an element of romance involved in this story which was also predictable. Girl meets boy. Girl and boy fall in love but can’t have each other. Boy and Girl find a way to be together. I wish that Ms. Gatrell had found a small way to make this book unique and stand out.
The story is geared more toward older teenagers and adults looking for an easy read. While the story is uncomplicated and easy to read, there is some language that prevents me from recommending this to younger teenagers. Also on the romance side, while there is not a sex scene, there are several intimate moments that wouldn’t be appropriate for younger audiences.
Overall I rate Meanma a 3 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed the book. I might even continue on to the second book. I found a few minor errors in the story line, but all in all the book was well edited. However, the story was too predictable to earn a full 4 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories about the fey world with an element of romance to it.
