Short story collections...

Hello~

Can anyone recommend a book of short stories? I like Stephen King, Alice Munro, Joyce Carol Oates, David Sedaris, a very broad range of authors. Even essays would be great, or observations, similar to Malcom Gladwell's work.

I'm a woman but I'm not a big fan of romance.

I just love, love, love Jeffrey Archer's short stories. He's probably one of the most prodigious short story writers I've read.

Just finished "Give me your Heart" Its a great collection of ten dark short stories. However seeing as you are a Joyce Carol Oates fan, I assume you have probably already read it. If you have not you would probably love it.

No, I had never heard of this collection, so I ordered it tonight from Amazon! I'm so excited!
Thanks!!!! I have something to look forward to on this boring island I now live on.....(I used to live outside of NYC, now we live on a remote island...perhaps I should write a book...lol!)

Yeah you definitely should write a book. It is one of the best way to spend time. Especially when you are bored.

'Just After Sunset' and 'Four Past Midnight' are excellent books which showcase short stories and novellas from the great Stephen King. Also, his most recent book of novellas "Full Dark No Stars" is well worth a read

How good is "The Langoliers" (not sure on the spelling there). I think King must be the first author in history to have a story where there is no past. I think his invention of the Langoliers coming along and eating up the past is genius. Impossible to travel back in time because it no longer exists. Ah to have an imagination as good as Kings.

You're right, the Langoliers is a story that I think about to this day. It really was unique, and that's what captivates me about SK. I also really loved The Long Walk from the Bachman days.

I thought "N." was very good in 'Just After Sunset'...it reminds me of what I wrote in the thread "what scares you". The idea of being isolated, having a problem/dilemma that no one can understand or help you with is very frightening!
