I've never really got along with Patricia Cornwell - crazy thing is, I actually admire her as a person, and once really enjoyed an interview with her, but I've not yet 'clicked' with her books. Maybe some time .....

I am grateful to learn that so many people dislike Steven King. I always thought it was just me. I felt alone and isolated in my dislike for this guy's work. As a result of reading this thread I now stand proudly, thumb on nose, and wiggling my fingers at Steven King.

Fairness Note: To prove that I am an honest man worthy of being left alone in a room with your silverware I must say that Shawshank Redemption and Silver Bullet were not that bad, but that's 2 out of 50+ novels - not a very good average.

J.K. Rowling. I tried reading the Harry Potter books, and they left me cold. Keep in mind I love children's fantasy books, as well as adult fantasy books, but I didn't get anything out of Harry Potter. I thought the writing was average, and the characters seemed flat to me.

Oh god.. P.C. & Kristin Cast. I 100% cannot stand their work. And I've been dared by a friend to read all of their currently published books. I admit I for some reason loved the House of Night series as a kid. Now though I don't understand why I ever liked the books at all because they're so trashy, racist and ... I'm gonna have to stop myself before I go into full on rant mode. I cringe so hard just thinking about their books and how many I still have to read.

Stephen King and Cassandra Clare. They’re works couldn’t ignite a fire inside me to like their works, sorry.

John Steinbeck F Scott Fitzgerald

I know the symbolism behind their books, I spent a lot of time studying the themes both inside and outside of school, but I still can't stand either author. I just feel so depressed after reading their books. And I've read plenty of writing about misfortune that still felt meaningful...overall it felt like reading pointless tragedy. I do still admire them for their style of writing though.

Gonna add another Stephen King to the list. His books are just so awful and boring!

I also hate James Patterson. I can’t stand the fact that he pumps out complete trash novels over and over again. To be fair, my hatred of his books stem strongly from the fact that he rights terrible (occasionally rip off sorts) books for young readers. It’s just sort of insulting how subpar the development and writing is when he publishes something for a young reader group.

I also think John Steinbeck’s stories are all terrible. Never fully understood why he’s so popular for English classes. Ugh.

And finally, Cassandra Clare. Unfortunately I’ve really enjoyed her stories and characters...but they might not even be hers so there’s that small consolation. She’s just such a terrible person that I’m kind of furious with myself for the fact that I actually like the books.

E.L. James...
I get it; men have porn and it's a huge industry. Finally, a form of pornography which is appealing to women comes along, and it is like a second sexual revolution. 50 Shades of Grey was a ground breaking book because it opened that door to the fairer sex.

I guess I'm just old school, though, because I don't think we should celebrate any form of pornography. It's addictive and destructive. Our society is already oversexualized. It's in every form of media. When 50 Shades passed up Harry Potter as the fastest selling book, I have to admit, I was a little worried about society. I've got a son and two daughters, and I don't want my girls thinking that their sexuality is the most important part of their identity. Just like I don't want my son to reduce women to their sexually appealing parts. I feel like porn does just that. And E.L. James found the a way to get women on the same bandwagon as men. Now, there's nobody left to keep society on a higher moral plane.

I have friends who like Nicholas Sparks and Paulo Coelho, and I simply don't understand why. I've tried reading some of their books but ended up throwing them across the room.

Who are your most disliked authors/books? I'm curious to see if somebody names one of my favorite ones :)
I also can't stand Nichols Sparks. It's not just that I don't like his books. I find them unreadable. Martin's Game of thrones is another one. But I don't think I can judge author by only one book. Especially since I never had an opinion that he is a bad writer. It's just that the story itself is not for me. I guess I am a sucker for a fair ending. Not happy, just fair.

@scififantauthor

I both agree and disagree with you! I have no problem with explicit descriptions of sex in a book, so long as it is in a loving and consensual relationship (or it is presented as a terrible thing if it is not), but I also think EL James is a terrible writer!

Does Lang Leav count? Because everybody seems to love her but I really can't stand her poems and novel. I tried to read and see what the fuss is all about but....

Patrick Rothfuss owes me the eight hours of my life back that I spent slogging a quarter of the way through The Name of the Wind before I gave up on it. What an obnoxious wish-fulfillment fantasy that doorstop is! I can't for the life of me understand why his work is so highly praised.

That would be J.k Rowling.I can't imagine an individual reading all the series in a row because it is voluminous.
