I'm sorry, but I absolutely hate, detest, and loathe - not to mention dislike - history, and historical fiction is no different. I have no interest in reading about Katja and what happens to her. It's a shame about the grammatical errors, too, but I'm glad they didn't mess up the read for you.

From this book I have appreciated the celebrations that were held from the achievements made and seeing that men are hard working individuals gives me much more pleasure to read on , "Sometimes the men would net one of the giant belugas, and on such a day there would be great celebration for the pounds of rich black caviar would fetch as much as a week’s hard fishing. And then again, sometimes the men would return with empty nets, and there would be no feasting, no songs. The men would hang out their nets to dry and go hunting instead.."

The review portrays what to expect well. However tragic ending is not my cup of tea.

From your description, it sounds like an amazing book. I was really looking forward to reading it. However, I couldn't get past the punctuation and other errors. I only got 7% of the way through the free sample before I quit. Maybe they'll put it through another round of editing, as you suggested, and I'll read it then.

Thanks for your review. I don't usually reach for historical fiction, but your review has me wanting to read this book. I enjoy learning about cultures with which I am unfamiliar. I appreciate the warning of the time hops as I will now be on the lookout for them.

Samy Lax wrote: 06 Mar 2018, 10:28 There is no doubt that the author has done his research abundantly well. Though there is a disclaimer before the book begins that the story weaves some fiction with real history, it’s hard to tell in places where fact ends and where fiction begins.
I read this same disclaimer while reading the book's sample and wondered how the integration of fact and fiction would work. I'm slightly disappointed to hear that the two are seamless and not distinguished. I personally love reading historical fiction because I like to be able to discuss what I've learned with friends. When there is no separation between fact and fiction, there is a high probability of making myself look a buffoon for referencing non-truths.

Cossack by Ronald McQueen is an illuminating story that gives us a glimpse into the plight of the Cossack people around WWII.
It often occurs to me that historical stories about the war normally focus on the soldiers not so much on the people affected by the war and is aftermath. Thank you for the review. I believe I will need to add this one to my Want to Read list.

Sorry if my quote doesn't appear correctly. I am still learning.

I have found the story quite interesting. Historical fiction always gives an inner picture of historical events as they happened.

I enjoy historical fiction but a book with confusing gaps in the storyline isn't for me. I however like that it accurately depicts the lives of the Cossacks during WWII.

It is great that reading great historical fiction you can in a way experience a part of history even if you were never there.

This sounds like a good book to learn about the history of the Cossacks under Stalin's rule. Because of the tragedy mentioned, I think I will pass on this one. Thanks for the review.

Historical fiction does not really interest me that much but the reviews seemed so positive that these provide enough encouragement for me to dip my foot in this genre. This book looks promising in terms of adventure and suspense!
