June, like most children here in Africa with outstanding talents, face some sort of criticism or the other instead of getting support from parent and their community. Not just in the 50's we still experience it. This book will actually change people's perspective towards such children without attaching religion to it. Nice review

It sounds as though some quite mystical ideas are integrated with a very down-to-earth account of life in Scotland, and then in San Francisco.

I could relate to the way Jimmy raised up his daughters because my very strict father raised me that way. My father thinks men are superior to women too. On the other hand, My father encouraged me to do my very best to have an education opposite to Jimmy's perspective about not sending his daughters to college because women are meant to get married and raise children only. Thanks for the detailed review.

Great review. The book touches on the life of a migrant to the state of California in the 50s. Congratulations for making it the BOTD.

I don't think this book is for me, I'm not really drawn to the description of the story, and the writing in the few pages I sampled isn't really drawing me in. That said, I'm curious and would like to know more about June's talents. I wonder what role that plays in her journey?

Excellent review of The Skye in June by June Ahern! It appears the author succeeded in conveying in retrospect the spirit of the 1950's with well embodied characters.

Sounds like a good book, I'll have to check it out and add it to my to-be-read list.

This seems like a book I would very much enjoy. I like the idea of a young girl growing up, trying to find her place in the world that isn't simply following the dictations of society. I look forward to reading it!

Might Ms Noel be me? But I don't have any psychic powers! :D Anyway, I like books about kids with special abilities and of siblings without the rivalry. I would have liked to read this book but don't care much for Catholicism or any religious undertones for that matter. Thanks for the review.

It seems like June's story touches on a wide range of topics from family relationships and immigration to gender inequality or paranormal elements. I would be interested to see how all of them are mixed together in this coming-of-age novel. Thank you for your review!

Thank you for your review of this book!

Although it was free - thank you! - and I downloaded it, I don't think this story is for me. I saw it classified as "women's fiction" and then the review mentions religious undertones. . .

So I don't think this autobiographical fiction story is for me.

Back in the 1950s, June experienced alienation because of her psychic abilities. I do not know how the Catholic Church views such abilities presently, but I believe that many of the rigid rules have been relaxed. For one, Catholics and Protestants now live harmoniously together, despite the differences in their religious beliefs.

I have read the sample and plan to finish the book. I hope June eventually finds acceptance by her family and community.

This one has interested me just from getting some details from your review. It sounds like it has a strong female lead, and after reading a few pages of the book, she is married to quite the awful man. Your review makes me want to keep on with this one.

I'm not a religious person and would definitely not enjoy reading about Catholicism and paganism that have been emphasized in the book. But apart from this the book seems to be pretty interesting. It arouses good topics worth talking about like female discrimination, the deterioration of family relationships. Add to this June's psychic abilities to see what other people could not see and you will have a nice mix worth reading. Congratulations on becoming BOTD!
