Something like The Joy of Cooking, where each section begins with a discussion about the ingredient or type of recipe being covered, can be really useful if it is a technique you are unfamiliar with. For example, take a person who has never made muffins and wants to try baking blueberry muffins. They can read the section about quick-breads, the section about muffins, the section about fruit muffins, and then the tips on blueberry muffins specifically. Cookbooks can be a great resource!

No, I really never have had to. I might look something up when I come across a recipe using a special cooking technique, but never have "read" a cookbook.

No. I have never read that cook-book. Most times I try to create my own dishes. Some recipes I got online.

When I got married, my step-mom gave me a very basic cookbook. It had things like baked chicken and mashed potatoes. Since I had virtually no cooking skills, it probably saved my husband from starvation.
