Then, I read through each poem in the collection twice; the first read-through is to just get a feel for the poem, and the second read is so I can look for literary devices, figurative language, etc. etc.
If I fall in love with the collection, then I look around local used book stores for a copy!
If you want more suggestions on how to get the most out of poetry, I would totally suggest Sound and Sense. I'm pretty sure it's not being printed anymore, but you can probably find it used online. It's just a really comprehensive set of suggestions, and it helped me so much, especially when I have to write essays on poetry for a course.
Happy reading!

Online sometimes, but most times the book comes much better of a deal for mereadertim109 wrote: ↑09 Jan 2007, 03:53 How do you read poetry? Do you buy whole poetry books? Do you just read single poems? Where would you find a single poem, online?

The poetry books takes you on this really intense journey. Them poet is driving you to where he or she wants you to be next.
But also, single poems. And single poems are better to address the mood you are in at the moment. You can choose what to read depending on what you feel like.
