Have you tried some of the old classic by Isaac Asimov? I was just finishing "Pebble in the Sky". An interesting read, written in the late 40's at the start of the atomic era (big influence on the story). I go a kick out of some of the dated stuff that was suppose to be in the "future" like smoking on an airplane (even though there was suppose to be space travel) and reading news papers. Also, I definetly notice the attitude of the characters was like something you would see in an old black and white film.

As for scifi, I'm fine with the space cadet sort of stuff or star wars clones, my pet peve is when they mix magic and science (like "the force" in starwars). I'm good if I know i'm going into a fantasy world because I'm expecting it and like wise with heavy science. My feel is it has to be one or the other.

I've read all the old classics, of course. I'm looking for new stuff that's not fantasy (no elves, please!) and not "space opera".

Example: The superb, adult, and gripping novel "Downward to the Earth" by Robert Silverberg. It's brilliant and adult.
