It's interesting to see a different perspective on this book. I agree that there were a lot of important themes throughout, those were some of my favorite parts when I read it. Great review!

I like stories related to the medical society. Family and Psychological issues are quite interesting too. I am looking forward to reading this book. Congrats Book of the Day. Thank you for this great review.

This book looks interesting, and the author reminds me of John Updike with his writing style. Dr. McDowell is definitely a good anti-hero as the main character.

I really enjoyed reading your review. Its one of many that highly recommend this book. I have since added it to my bookshelf to read and hope I find equal in the novel.

I like that this book shows the long-term fruit of arrogance and selfishness. The rise and fall of McDowell has life lessons for the observer. The suspenseful plot and well developed characters are additional bonus.

The review certainly provides a good summary of this book. Studying human nature through books is interesting. From the sample the author certainly knows how to make you hate a character. I certainly hope that Hiram has some redeeming qualities at some point.

An awesome piece of fictional book with psychological and political issues.. A book with well written plot. A great and well written review.

Your review makes me want to read the whole book! I read the sample and didn't like McDowell as a character, but it is apparent that he develops some insight into the way he behaves badly as the story continues. This makes the book more appealing to me.

You've really got me wanting to read this book now. I like that it's organized into two parts. It focuses on the rise and fall of a self-important person. A plot and character like that makes for great character development. The author seems to deliver. I truly wonder what becomes of McDowell after the second part of the story. Thank you so much for your excellent review!

Thanks for the very thorough review, but I dislike books with detestable protagonists, so I have no interest in reading about a "a self-important, self-centered and ambitious" person, even if roughly 50% of the tale is about "his values and perspectives about life" changing.

The mention of cancer as the cause of McDowell's wife as the novel starts is really sad. Otherwise it is a book with its twists and all manner of turns. Worth reading. Thanks for this review.

Your review provides a good overview of the book with enough sense of what will happen next to peak interest in reading. The book itself appears to bring to light the attitude and personality of surgeons who view themselves as gods and what happens when life shows them they are not.
