That character's marriage seems to be the perfect example for the controversial lesson this book teaches. I don't think I'll need that lesson anytime soon.

Thanks for taking the challenge to read and review this book, Bianka Walter!
I never actually thought of what made him want to write it. Honestly, now that I've read it, I feel like it was just an excuse to try and publish his poetry. There was more insight into the poetry than the actual body of the book!
And I'm with you, I don't think I need that lesson either.
Thanks, as always, for your great comments :)

This book is definitely not for religious people. One of the chapters (that I didn't delve into in my review) was on Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. He starts by saying, "What a drag! There was no one to cheat with." And then delves into how Adam and Eve understood the true nature of sex. Now, I am not a religious person, but I found this utterly distasteful. I think it's fine for the author to promote free thinking in opposition to religious beliefs, but I don't think that he should then drag the teachings of the Bible into it.
Anyway - that's my two cents worth :)

Exactly. One must be able to support one's arguments.

Well, there is a part of the book that states that he is not promoting open marriage (he contradicts himself a lot...), because open relationships are "emotionally dangerous". He advocates true sharing. For me, I don't see how the two are different, and again - he does a poor job of explaining it.
Anyway, thank you gen_g and CatInTheHat for commenting, I really appreciate it :)

Yes, I think the title is the best part of the book!

Love the honesty of your review! Seems like the author based his book on some flimsy research and a real stream of consciousness approach to the writing, which doesn’t work for me when it comes to non-fiction. And of course the subject matter is highly contentious. All very well to say “just let go of your jealousy” but in reality, I think most people in committed relationships would struggle with this.

Well, exactly. He says, as humans, we have animal instincts. What he doesn't realise is that, as humans, we will naturally become jealous in certain situations. Especially ones he is suggesting.

Apart from the overall theme being unappealing, the fact that the author tried to broach an unpopular ground, that encourages some free-thinking, yet is being stereotypical is ironic. And that's just a few of many things that turn me off about the book. Thanks for your detailed review!
I completely agree with you. My sentiments exactly. I will be avoiding this one.

It seems odd to me that a book espousing open marriage is actually an outlet for someone's poetry.

Nice job on the review...too bad the book wasn't groundbreaking.

Just the title was a total absolutely not for me. As I was reading your review and the author’s suggestions and opionions that people should give way to their animalistic side, does he know how many animals mate for life? It sounds like he is forgetting about the vows people make to one another in a marriage..to each other. Wow! This one really makes me wonder where people get their ideas from, and my dislike of the subject is not “religion” based. It’s humanity based and the idea of commitment. Good job on your review, and just like you, I’m out to lunch on poetry usually.

It's weird, right? Well, I suppose by the end of the book, nothing shocked me.

He actually brought up animals mating for life. He went on to say that human's do not fall into that category, and that we were made to procreate. So the more partners, the better. :shock2:
And I agree, people making vows is not a societal thing. It's a personal thing.

There are way too many things wrong here for me. I am strongly against the views this author could not even support. And then a compilation of his poetry? That is so random. I'm not a poetry fan at all. Like you, I have no clue what makes poetry good or bad. You did a good job of explaining the pitfalls of this book. I'll stay far away from it.

Agreed!!!! Very well written response. I'm appalled by this book to be completely open about it. Unfortunately, there probably is a larger market for this book than we want to know about.
