Thank you for sharing your personal experience. I wasn't sure about finishing this book, but your account made me remember the importance of this time period.
Bless you. Too many people prefer to turn away, just like some of Zach's neighbors did when he got sick. Still do.

This book can fill in a lot of gaps. It hit home for me.aacodreanu wrote: ↑11 Nov 2019, 13:44You are right and I should read the book as, while being contemporary with the war, I only have vague representations of what was really happening. I owe at least that to those whose fate brought them to die there or live to tell and try to be "normal" after such a trauma.

This was a hard book for me to read. Although I was in my teens at the time of the war and I saw it on the news every night I had no idea of the reality and the horror. I feel guilty for not having paid more attention. Before reading this I only had the picture in my head of the girl with napalm burning her back. I had thought that was an isolated incident. How wrong I've been.

Oh the war! I won't be reading this book. Thanks for telling us what it is about ☺djr6090 wrote: ↑02 Nov 2019, 12:54 I just started to read the book. For anyone interested, it was 44 years ago today that the last US combat forces were withdrawn from South Vietnam. According to the Voice of America, we left 7200 civilians of the Dept of Defense behind as advisers. The fighting continued for more than a year after. I'm glad that writers like Miller commit this era of history so accurately to the body of popular historical fiction.
