I like reading because it offers me escapism where I can imagine the accent the character may use or taste the flavours being described through seamless similes and majestic metaphors.

Lots of reasons. I love reading about people in far away countries . Books transport you away from your world and help you leave your troubles behind.

Reading helps me escape from problems in my life, often if I’m mad at someone or sad or disappointed I can open a book and just lose myself in the story and when I come out again I feel so much more able to cope with life, plus the fact that there’s so much to learn through reading

I most often read for the sheer escapism of it. When you worry about stupid things all the time, or spend too much time thinking up scenarios that will never happen it's nice to just... stop. Just the idea of huddling on the couch in my softest socks, my Gandalf hoodie and a big cup of tea destresses me.
But then of course you have those aha! books, and those tend to have a bigger impact on me. Fahrenheit 451 comes to mind, but I mean those books that gives you a mini-epiphany or mini existential crisis, like they just forcefully made you see the bigger picture, and you can't help but go damn, you're so right.
And then you have category three, with characters that you can relate to so much that they make you understand yourself just a little bit better and make you feel a little less alone, because thank the stars, someone else is thinking like that.
I just find there is no other medium that can achieve so much. Sure, music and movies are great, but a song is only so long and can only depict so many emotions, and movies... well, the book is usually better :D

That might have been a bit of a ramble :angelic-cyan:

Well it gives you knowledge and lets you escape into an other world. Therefore reading is the perfect opportunity to forget about your current problems for a while. I personally like reading books in foreign languages to strengthen my vocabulary and the language in genereal!

It depends on the genre. I read scienсe books for knowledge and fiction books for fun. However, many fiction books contain valuable philosophical concepts.
In general, any good book is like a black hole. It can really suck the reader into itself.

I've always loved reading but my most potent motivation was most likely being bullied in school. I started retreating to the library and escaping into books before class and at lunchtime. Pretty soon, I started viewing books as a doorway to my own personal panic-room.

I love being transported to other times and places. I also LOVE to learn new things and wish college was free - I would never leave. Finding used textbooks on interesting topics at St. Vinnies and Goodwill is great because I can learn about a broad range of topics without having to pay for college classes.

I have reasons why I like reading. Mostly I just like to read. Its better than doing drugs or being a drunk alcoholic or whatever.

plus the stories and characters I enjoy when reading a new book

My reasons are all of the above. Reading is like dreaming, or lucid dreaming, only much, much easier and a great deal better because you can do it for longer and remember more of the experience. You get to make friends with people who do not exist in real life. You get to go to places no one else will ever go, even the people who read the same book as you, because every reader sees, hears and feels differently. You come home armed with weapons, or new ways to deal with the situation you started reading to escape from. You learn empathy. Also the smell of a new book is just....ahhhhhh

Scott wrote: 19 Aug 2007, 12:05 We all like reading. In fact, most of us would probably say that we love reading.

Why do you like it so much? What is it about reading that attracts you to it?

I think I like reading because it allows me to hear from people who have something important to say. You can read from the best thinkers no matter where they are or even when. I'm amazed by the fact that I can go to the book store and buy hours of reading material written by someone who lived hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

What about you?
There are so many reasons that I love reading. First and foremost, it offers me an escape from reality. As a public school student, I can honestly say that I hate school. Not the learning aspect, but the immature teenagers I am surrounded by day in and day out. Whenever I am reading, I can disappear into my book, disappear into their worlds, and completely forget where I am. I also love the learning aspect of reading. It allows us to hear from people of different walks of life and of different viewpoints. There are so many benefits to reading, but the escape and the learning spects are by far my favorites.
